For weeks, Nia Ashford has woken at 4 AM drenched in sweat, hollowed out by nightmares she can’t explain. The 22-year-old research librarian is certain she’s just stressed, until the local news reports a string of deaths from an unidentified wasting illness, and she begins to wonder if she’s next. Desperate for help, she follows her best friend’s advice and walks into a support-group meeting. It’s the wrong room. When Nia describes the thing that is draining her, Drake recognizes it at once, and he knows he should walk away. Instead, he can’t.
As the attacks grow worse, Nia must face a hidden world of vampire-witches, ancient laws that punish the truth with death, and a coven that isn’t sure she should know any of it. Drake has been grieving for five hundred years and swore never to hope again. Nia has lost her faith, her family, and her certainty. Together they have a few weeks to learn what is hunting her, and why it wants her so badly.
